Onam is here.

She wakes up to the gleaming faces of her nine sisters,

She bathes in the showers of prosperity,

The flame of the lamp draws a line of vermillion on her forehead,

The vibrant colours of the flower carpet paint her saree and jewels,

The Sadya she cooks fill everyones heart and mind with delight.

When she enters the house,

Her presence spreads health, wealth and happiness,

Onam is home once again.

Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala. It is also the day when we welcome the great Asura king Mahabali to our land. The day is observed as to demolish the demon in each one of us and instil in ourselves the good and moralistic properties of life.

Sadya is the assortment of different types of side dishes, with the mains often as Rice and a curry and the sweet dish as different types of payasam ( a dish somewhat like a porridge)

Sadya is served in plantain leaf and it is said to fulfil everyones tastebuds as the dishes have all sorts of flavours like sweet, sour, tangy etc.
